American Express Platinum Card Review: Fees, Rewards & Is It Worth ₹66,000 in 2026?
₹66,000 a year. Before GST. That’s the first thing everyone notices about the American Express Platinum Card (often called the Platinum Charge Card), and fair enough. It’s the most expensive mainstream card in India by a long way.
The second thing people notice (usually a little later) is that the fee is only half the story. The other half is what you get back, and how much of it you’ll actually use.
2026 has also been a busy year for this card. Two transfer partners got better, one disappeared, a popular shopping multiplier just ended, and Amex has paused new card applications in India for now. Most reviews you’ll find online haven’t caught up yet. This one has.
Heads up: New American Express card applications in India are temporarily paused while Amex updates its card-issuing systems. If you already hold the Platinum Card, nothing changes. Your benefits continue as usual.
Quick Answer
What Is the American Express Platinum Card?
The American Express Platinum Card is a metal charge card from American Express Banking Corp. in India. It costs ₹66,000 + GST a year, earns Membership Rewards points, and has no preset spending limit. The catch? You pay your full statement every month. Its value comes mostly from luxury travel: lounges, hotel status and airline transfers. Also, Amex is both the bank and the network here, so there’s no Visa or RuPay version of it.
Key Takeaways
₹66,000 + GST a year, with no spend-based fee waiver. The welcome gift is worth up to ₹60,000.
Earns 1 Membership Rewards point per ₹40, 3 per ₹40 abroad, and up to 20 per ₹40 at RewardXcelerator brands.
7 transfer partners. Virgin Atlantic (5:4) and Hilton (2:3) both improved in August 2026; Etihad was dropped.
1,550+ airport lounges in 140 countries, plus Marriott Gold, Hilton Gold and five more hotel statuses.
New Amex applications in India are paused for now. Existing cardholders keep every benefit.

Charge Card vs Credit Card: What’s the Difference?
Most people mix these two up. Fair, they look identical in your wallet. Here’s how the Amex Platinum charge card stacks up against a regular credit card:
Charge card (Amex Platinum)
Regular credit card
Paying the bill
You clear all of it, every month
Pay the minimum, carry the rest
Spending limit
Nothing set in advance
A fixed number
Interest
None (miss a payment and it’s a 5% fee, min ₹300)
Charged on whatever you carry over
In short: a charge card gives you more room to spend, and less room to delay paying. You still get up to 48 days of interest-free credit on purchases.

How You Earn Membership Rewards Points on Amex Platinum
Here’s the earning structure, minus the fine-print fog:
Where you spend
What you earn
Everyday spends
1 point for every ₹40
Fuel
5 points for every ₹100 (up to 5,000 a month)
Spends abroad (anything not in INR)
3 points for every ₹40
RewardXcelerator 10X brands
10 points per ₹40
RewardXcelerator 20X brands
20 points per ₹40
So on everyday spends, you’re earning 2.5 points for every ₹100. That’s not a huge number on paper. What matters more is what each of those points turns into, and we’ll get there in a minute.
One thing worth noting on overseas spends: the 3X rate is nice, but you’re also paying a 3.5% forex markup. The points don’t cancel that out on their own, so don’t treat 3X as a reason to swipe abroad without thinking.
Add-on cards earn too, and their points land in the main cardholder’s account.
When Points Actually Land
Points get credited once your charges are recorded in the Membership Rewards system. Nothing unusual there.
The part people miss: if you don’t pay your statement in full by the due date, you can lose the points you earned that billing cycle. That’s the charge-card rule. Pay in full, every time, and this never becomes a problem.
And the points won’t run away from you. Keep the account open and in good shape, and they just sit there until you’re ready.
RewardXcelerator: 20X and 10X Partners
This is where Platinum quietly earns its keep if you already shop at these brands. Buy from them with your Platinum Card and you earn bonus points on top of your regular 1 point per ₹40.
BOSS, Emporio Armani, Giorgio Armani, Galeries Lafayette, The Collective, TUMI, Tata CLiQ Fashion, Tata CLiQ Luxury
Jewelry & watches
Bvlgari, Kamal Watch, Moi Jewels, Zoya

Dyson, Kama Ayurveda, Dhun Wellness
Art
Chawla Art Gallery, The Form Art
Food & dining
Bili Hu, Meatigo, Indian Accent, Chor Bizarre, Comorin, Fireback, Hosa, Drift, The Quorum
Travel & auto
Air India, Mercedes-Benz
The program runs till 31 January 2027, with no overall cap on bonus points. A few conditions do matter:
Mercedes-Benz: new cars only, minimum ₹10,00,000 transaction.
BOSS, Giorgio Armani, Emporio Armani: in-store purchases only.
Air India: no bonus if you pay through a separately shared payment link.
Indian Accent: deposits, cover charges and advance booking fees don’t count.
Kama Ayurveda: franchise stores are excluded.
Tata CLiQ: gold and silver coins or bars don’t earn the bonus.
Bili Hu: buy from Bili Hu directly. Cafés, restaurants and hotels that sell their coffee don’t count.
Restaurants and TUMI: only participating outlets qualify, so check the list before you go.
Bvlgari: the Park Hyatt Hyderabad (Banjara Hills) store is left out.
Refunds: cancel or return something and the bonus points go back too.
Digital wallets: don’t qualify at any RewardXcelerator brand.
Pro Tip: Pay with the physical card (or tap it) at these brands. Paying through a wallet quietly kills the bonus.
Reward Multiplier Has Ended: Use ShopWise Instead
If you used Amex’s Reward Multiplier portal to earn 5X on Flipkart, Myntra, MakeMyTrip, Apple and friends, that door has closed. The program was discontinued effective 30 September 2026.
ShopWise is still around, though. It sells e-vouchers for 200-odd brands (Tata CLiQ Luxury, Tanishq, MakeMyTrip, Swiggy, Uber and Nykaa are a few), and buying those still gets you boosted points. The brand list moves around a lot, so peek at it before you buy.
What Doesn’t Earn Points
Three things get you zero: insurance premiums, your electricity, gas and water bills, and EMIs that the merchant sets up for you.
Fuel, oddly enough, is the opposite. You get 5 points per ₹100 at the pump (twice the usual rate) until you hit 5,000 points in a month.
What Your Membership Rewards Points Are Actually Worth
That’s exactly why the transfer partner list matters more than the earning table.
Airline Transfer Partners
Four of the five airlines ask for 2 of your points per mile. Virgin is the odd one out (in a good way).

Person A vs Person B: Same 40,000 Points, Very Different Outcomes
Say you’ve built up 40,000 Membership Rewards points. At the regular earn rate, that’s about ₹16 lakh of spending.
Person A goes for Taj Experiences gift cards. Right now Amex is running a promo where 20,000 points get you a ₹10,000 card (normally it’s 25,000 points). So Person A walks away with ₹20,000 in Taj cards. Call it 50 paise a point. Easy, and honestly not bad.
Person B moves those 40,000 points out instead. Depending on the trip, that’s 20,000 KrisFlyer miles, or 32,000 Virgin Points, or 60,000 Hilton points.
Who did better? Depends entirely on what Person B books with them. Here’s the formula we always fall back on:
Value per point = what the redemption would’ve cost in cash ÷ points used
So if those 20,000 KrisFlyer miles cover a flight that would have cost ₹40,000 in cash, Person B got ₹1 per point. That’s double Person A’s value, from the exact same points.
Want to run the numbers on your own points? Our free Reward Points Calculator does the math for you.
A little short for the transfer you want? Amex lets you top up. It’s ₹400 for every 1,000 points, and you can buy up to 10,000 (or as many as you already have, if that’s less).
How Transfers Work
Link first. Add your own airline or hotel account before you transfer. Verification can take up to 14 days, so don’t leave this for the night before you book.
Expect 3–5 working days. Some partners post faster, but plan for the full window.
Transfers are final. Once points move, they can’t come back.
Your own account only. You can’t transfer to a friend’s or family member’s loyalty account.
Golden Rule: Find the seat or the room first. Transfer second. Never the other way round.
What Changed in 2026
Quick recap of the year so far:
1 July 2026: Etihad Guest dropped off the transfer list.
18 August 2026: Virgin Atlantic improved from 2:1 to 5:4. Hilton Honors improved from 10:9 to 2:3.
7 September – 10 October 2026: New bookings through the Platinum Travel service are temporarily unavailable.
30 September 2026: The Reward Multiplier 5X program ended. ShopWise continues.
2026: New Amex card applications in India paused. Existing cards are unaffected.
Net Effect: Better or Worse?
Honestly? Better for travelers, slightly worse for online shoppers.
Losing Etihad hurts if you liked their award chart. But Virgin Atlantic went from 2 points per mile to 1.25 points per mile, and Hilton now multiplies your points instead of shaving them. For anyone who transfers, that’s a real upgrade.
The Reward Multiplier exit mostly affects people who ran everyday shopping through the Amex portal. ShopWise softens that blow.
Airport Lounge Access
Global Lounge Collection
Your Platinum Card gets you into 1,550+ airport lounges across 140 countries through the American Express Global Lounge Collection. That includes:
Centurion Lounges
Escape Lounges
Delta Sky Club (when you meet Delta’s travel conditions)
Priority Pass lounges
Lufthansa lounges
Domestic lounge partners in India
Each network has its own rules, so it’s worth a quick check before you fly.
Centurion Lounges
Unlimited, complimentary access for eligible Platinum cardholders. These are Amex’s own lounges, and usually the first ones cardholders look for. Guest rules vary by location, so confirm before bringing someone along.
Priority Pass: Free Abroad, Paid in India
This is the one that catches people out.
You’re auto-enrolled in Priority Pass. One add-on cardholder can enroll too.
Priority Pass lounges outside India are complimentary.
Priority Pass lounges inside India cost US$35 per person, per visit. That applies to you and any guest.
So for domestic lounges, lean on the Amex domestic partners instead of your Priority Pass card.
Hotel Status & Luxury Travel Benefits

Breakfast for two
Guaranteed 4pm late checkout
Noon check-in, when available
Room upgrade, when available
Wi-Fi
A US$100 property or experience credit
There are 1,300+ FHR properties, and Amex puts the average benefit value at about ₹44,300 per stay (based on its own methodology). Even if your number is lower, one or two FHR stays a year goes a long way toward the fee.
The Hotel Collection
A lighter version of FHR. Book at least 2 consecutive nights and you get a US$100 experience credit plus a room upgrade when available.

Renewal gift: up to ₹35,000. You’ll get this voucher after completing a year, spending over ₹20 lakh in that membership year, and paying the renewal fee.

Amex Platinum Card Fees & Charges
Amex Platinum Card Annual Fee
You pay ₹66,000 + GST in year one and every year after. Add the tax and it’s about ₹77,880.
And no, you can’t spend your way out of it. Lots of premium cards drop the fee once you cross a spend target. Amex doesn’t do that here.
Amex Platinum Card Limit: No Preset Limit (But Not Unlimited)
People hear “no preset limit” and picture a blank cheque. Not quite.
Every swipe gets a quick yes or no from Amex, and that call depends on what you earn, how you usually spend, and how you’ve paid in the past. That usually leaves you a lot of headroom. Still, if you’re about to buy something really big, a heads-up call to Amex saves you an awkward moment at the counter.

A few details worth knowing before you rely on these:
Overseas medical is for you, not your add-on cardholders, and only until you turn 60. You get one claim a year, it covers up to 5 trips, there’s a US$100 deductible, and pre-existing conditions are out.
Purchase protection lasts 90 days and kicks in if something you bought is lost to fire, burglary or a natural calamity in India. If your new laptop simply stops working, that’s not covered. Neither is gold or silver.
Where the Platinum clearly wins is the luxury layer: Centurion lounges, hotel status and FHR. Where it clearly loses is cost. If you’re weighing it against the Magnus, our full Axis Magnus review breaks down the other side.
Is the Amex Platinum Card Worth ₹66,000?
Our take: if you fly abroad a few times a year and actually use hotel status, yes. If your card mostly lives in Indian malls and restaurants, probably not.
Here’s how the numbers stack up in year one:
What you get
Approximate value
Welcome gift
Up to ₹60,000
One FHR stay (Amex’s average benefit value)
~₹44,300
Marriott Gold, Hilton Gold and 5 other statuses
Depends on how often you stay
Centurion and Global Lounge Collection access
Depends on how often you fly
Annual fee (with GST)
₹77,880
The welcome gift alone covers about 77% of the first-year fee. Add a single FHR stay and you’re already ahead, on paper at least.
Year two is the real test. The renewal gift (up to ₹35,000) only kicks in at ₹20 lakh of annual spend. So from year two, the card needs to earn its place through the stuff you use: stays, lounges and smart point transfers.
Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Get This Card
Get it if:
• You fly internationally several times a year. • You stay at Marriott, Hilton, Taj or FHR properties and will use the status. • You spend ₹20 lakh or more a year on your card. • You transfer points to airlines or hotels instead of redeeming for vouchers. • You already shop at RewardXcelerator brands.
Think twice if:
• Your card mostly pays for groceries, fuel and the odd dinner out. • Lounges and fancy hotels aren’t really your thing. • You want a low fee or a fee waiver. • You rely on Priority Pass lounges inside India (those cost US$35 a visit here). • You prefer cashback over points.
Eligibility & How to Apply
First, the important bit: new American Express card applications in India are temporarily paused. Once they reopen, here’s what you’ll need.
American Express Platinum Card Eligibility
Criteria
Salaried
Self-employed
Age
Over 18
Over 18
Personal annual income
₹25 lakh or more
₹15 lakh or more
Business vintage

Trading for 12+ months
You’ll also need to be a resident Indian with a current address in India, a savings or current account with a bank in India, and a clean credit history with no payment defaults. Amex doesn’t publish a minimum credit score.
Cities Where the Card Is Issued
For now, Amex only issues this card if you live in one of these 26 places: Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Indore, Coimbatore, Chandigarh/Tricity, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Ernakulam, Vijayawada, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Nagpur, Nashik, Trivandrum, Mysuru, Cuttack and Vizag.
What You’ll Need to Apply
The form itself is the usual stuff. Your name, email, phone, date of birth and address. What you earn, where you work (or what your business does), and who you bank with. Amex may also ask for KYC papers along the way: ID, address proof, PAN and income proof.
One more thing: once you’re approved, activate the card within 37 days, or it gets cancelled.
Real Redemption Walkthrough
Let’s make this real. Say you spend ₹20 lakh on your Platinum Card over a year.
You earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points at the regular rate (more if some of it went through RewardXcelerator brands).
You also unlock the renewal gift, up to ₹35,000, when you pay your renewal fee.
You pick a trip. Say it’s a Singapore Airlines flight.
You link your KrisFlyer account to Membership Rewards. Give it up to 14 days.
You transfer 50,000 points at 2:1, which gives you 25,000 KrisFlyer miles in about 3–5 working days.
You book.
More of a hotel person? Send those 50,000 points to Hilton and you’d have 75,000 Hilton points. Send them to Marriott and it’s 50,000 Bonvoy points.
We pulled everything here from Amex India’s own terms in September 2026. Amex tweaks this stuff a lot, so double-check before you apply or move points.

FAQs
Is the Amex Platinum a credit card or a charge card?
Charge card. That means no fixed limit, but you clear the whole bill every month. There’s no interest to roll over either; miss a payment and you’re looking at a 5% fee (₹300 at the very least).
What is the annual fee of the Amex Platinum Card in India? Can it be waived?
₹66,000 plus GST, so roughly ₹77,880 a year, first year included. Sadly, no amount of spending gets it waived. Cross ₹20 lakh in a year, though, and Amex sends you a renewal voucher worth up to ₹35,000.
Can I apply for the Amex Platinum Card right now?
Not right now, sorry. Amex has hit pause on new cards in India while it sorts out its systems. If you’ve already got one, you’re fine. Everything keeps working.
What income do I need for the Amex Platinum Card?
₹25 lakh a year if you draw a salary. If you run your own business, it’s ₹15 lakh, and the business should be more than a year old.
What is the credit limit on the Amex Platinum Card?
Technically, there isn’t one. Amex looks at each purchase as it comes in (your income, your habits, your track record) and approves it or doesn’t. Roomy, yes. Bottomless, no.
Is the Amex Platinum a metal card?
Yep, it’s metal. You’ll notice the weight the first time you hold it next to your other cards.
Does Priority Pass work in India on Amex Platinum?
Sort of. You can use Priority Pass lounges here, but each visit costs US$35 per head. Abroad, same card, zero charge.
What are the Amex Platinum transfer partners in 2026?
Seven. Five airlines (Cathay’s Asia Miles, British Airways, Qatar, Singapore’s KrisFlyer and Virgin Atlantic) plus two hotel chains, Marriott and Hilton. Etihad got dropped back on 1 July 2026.
What happened to Amex Reward Multiplier?
It’s done. Amex shut the 5X portal on 30 September 2026. ShopWise vouchers are the closest thing left, and they still pay extra points.
Is the Amex Platinum Card worth it in India?
For a frequent flyer who’ll actually use the lounges, the hotel status and the transfers? Usually, yes. For someone who mostly spends at home and travels once a year, you’ll get more out of a cheaper card.
