Checked against Air India’s Maharaja Club pages, points calculator and bank partner pages, 30 October 2026.
What’s the real Air India points value in rupees? A Maharaja Club point is usually worth ₹1 to ₹2 when you use it on an award flight. On long-haul business class to the US, it can be worth ₹4 or more. Air India sells points at ₹1.50 each, so that’s a handy line: anything below it is a weak redemption, and anything above it is a good one.
The catch? There’s no fixed value. Use 35,000 points on an economy seat to London and each one is worth about ₹0.73. Put the same points towards business class and they’re worth more than double. So we did the maths. Here’s what we found: real routes priced in rupees, the 2026 changes, the cards that move points in, and the mistakes that cost you value.
Quick Answer
How much is 1 Air India point worth?
Most of the time, one Air India Maharaja Club point gets you ₹1 to ₹2 on an award flight, once you’ve paid the taxes and fees in cash. Delhi to Goa works out at about ₹1.60 a point. Fly Delhi to San Francisco in business and it’s closer to ₹4. Air India sells points for ₹1.50 itself, so anything above that is a good deal.
Key takeaways
Expect ₹1 to ₹2 a point on a decent redemption. US business class is the standout at ₹4 or more. Delhi to London economy is one of the weakest, at about ₹0.73.
Award prices dropped on most routes in April 2026. Domestic flights now start at 1,500 points. A few routes, like Delhi to London in economy, actually got pricier.
You still pay taxes, fees and fuel surcharge in cash. That can be ₹2,000 on a domestic flight and ₹15,000 or more on a long-haul one.
Your card decides how fast you get there. HSBC Premier, ICICI Emeralde Private Metal and Times Black transfer 1:1. HDFC Infinia is 2:1, and most ICICI cards are 6:1.
Points last 24 months, and every paid Air India flight resets the clock. Award trips don’t.

What is 1 Air India Maharaja Club point worth?

Air India doesn’t put a rupee value on Maharaja points. What a point is worth depends on the flight you book, the cabin, and how much cash you’d have paid for the same seat.
Here’s the simple way to work it out:
Value per point = (cash fare − cash you still pay on the award) ÷ points used
That middle bit matters more than most people think. Every Air India award comes with taxes, a fuel surcharge and a booking fee, and you pay all of it in cash:
- Booking fee: ₹475 on domestic awards, ₹649 to short-haul destinations like the Gulf or Singapore, and ₹999 to long-haul ones like the UK or US. It’s per person, per ticket, and you don’t get it back.
- Fuel surcharge: since 9 October 2026, this is ₹400 to ₹1,200 on domestic flights, depending on distance. It’s US$55 to the Gulf, US$135 to Europe and the UK, and US$215 to North America.
- Airport taxes: these vary by route.
Here’s roughly what a point is worth by how you use it:
| How you use your points | Rough value per point |
|---|---|
| International business class, US or Europe | ₹1.50 to ₹4+ |
| Gulf and Southeast Asia economy (12,000 points) | About ₹1.50 |
| Domestic economy at the lowest level | ₹1 to ₹1.60 |
| Domestic economy at a higher level | About ₹0.50 |
| Long-haul economy to the UK | About ₹0.70 |
| Air India’s own selling price | ₹1.50 |
Air India points value in rupees: real routes
We priced six Air India routes for a one-way flight on 2 December 2026 and compared the cash fare with the points needed. Points are from Air India’s calculator and its own published examples, at the lowest award level.
| Route and cabin | Cash fare | Points | Cash you still pay (est.) | Value per point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi to Mumbai, economy | ₹7,539 | 5,000 | About ₹2,300 | About ₹1.04 |
| Delhi to Goa, economy | ₹10,784 | 5,000 | About ₹2,700 | About ₹1.62 |
| Delhi to Dubai, economy | ₹25,352 | 12,000 | About ₹7,400 | About ₹1.50 |
| Delhi to London, economy | ₹41,304 | 35,000 | About ₹15,800 | About ₹0.73 |
| Delhi to London, business | ₹2,10,017 | 1,00,000 | About ₹15,800 | About ₹1.94 |
| Delhi to San Francisco, business | ₹5,78,655* | 1,30,000 | About ₹23,400 | About ₹4.27 |
Half the return fare. The one-way fare was ₹7,33,207, which would make it ₹5.46 a point, so we went with the lower number.
A few things jump out. Delhi to Goa beats Delhi to Mumbai, even though both cost 5,000 points, because the Goa fare is higher. Business class beats economy on the same route. And Delhi to London in economy is a poor deal, because the fuel surcharge, taxes and fees eat almost 40% of the fare.
Award prices move around too. On Delhi to Mumbai, the Value level can be anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 points, and Prime is 14,000. Pay 10,000 for that ₹7,539 flight and you’re getting about ₹0.52 a point. Moral of the story: check the points price against the cash fare before you book.
Want to run your own numbers? Air India’s points calculator shows the points range for any route. Put that next to the cash fare for your date and use the formula above.
What 1,000, 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 Maharaja points get you
Here’s what common balances can do, at the lowest award levels.
| Points | What they can get you | Rough value |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | Not quite an award on its own. Top up with Cash + Points or save up | ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 |
| 3,000 | One or two short domestic hops (Bengaluru to Chennai starts at 1,500) | Depends on the route |
| 5,000 | A one-way domestic flight like Delhi to Goa, or a domestic upgrade (from 4,000) | About ₹8,000 on Delhi to Goa |
| 10,000 | A pricier domestic flight, or two cheaper ones | ₹10,000 to ₹16,000 |
| 12,000 | A one-way economy flight to the Gulf or Southeast Asia | About ₹18,000 on Delhi to Dubai |
What changed in Maharaja Club in 2026
Air India rolled out a big set of Maharaja Club changes from 1 April 2026. Most award prices went down, but not all of them.
What got cheaper:
- Domestic awards: these start at 1,500 points, about 25% lower on average and up to 60% lower on some routes. Delhi to Goa fell from 9,000 to 5,000, and Hyderabad to Dubai from 21,000 to 12,000.
- Long-haul business: to the US, Canada, Europe and Australia, it now needs 25 to 45% fewer points. Delhi to San Francisco went from 1,85,000 to 1,30,000.
- Upgrades: these now start at 4,000 points on domestic flights and 20,000 on international ones.
- Earlier booking isn’t required any more. The lowest award levels are now available up to 30 days before you fly. Before, you had to book more than 90 days out.
What got pricier: a few routes went the other way. Points tracker doubledip.in found Delhi to London economy rose from 30,000 to 35,000, Delhi to Hong Kong from 16,000 to 30,000, and Gulf business class to 50,000.
Other changes worth knowing:
- Points now usually land within 48 hours of your flight, and often much faster.
- Cancelling an award is free up to 30 days out for Silver members, 7 days for Gold and 2 hours for Platinum. Red members don’t get a free window, so it’s a 25% fee for them, and for everyone else outside their window.
- You can now earn and redeem on Air India Express flights. Earning started on 22 May 2026.
Flying Returns, Club Vistara and Maharaja Club
If you’re searching for Air India Flying Returns, it’s now Maharaja Club. Air India’s old Flying Returns and Vistara’s Club Vistara came together to form Maharaja Club after the merger. Your old account and points moved across, and you now log in to Maharaja Club on airindia.com.
Which credit cards transfer points to Air India Maharaja Club?
Five big Indian banks let you move card points into Maharaja Club: Axis, HDFC, ICICI, HSBC and SBI Card. The ratio is what really matters, because it decides how many Air India points you end up with.
| Bank | Cards | Ratio (card points : Air India points) | Time to arrive |
|---|---|---|---|
| HSBC | Premier, TravelOne | 1:1 | Up to 5 working days |
| HSBC | Other cards, including Visa Platinum | 2:1 | Varies |
| ICICI | Emeralde Private Metal, Times Black | 1:1 | 5 working days |
| ICICI | All other eligible cards | 6:1 (minimum 2,000 ICICI points) | 5 working days |
| HDFC | Infinia, Infinia Metal, Diners Black, Diners Black Metal | 2:1 | 2 to 4 working days |
| HDFC | Regalia Gold, BizPower | 3:1 | 2 to 4 working days |
| Axis | Atlas (EDGE Miles) | 1:2 | Within 5 working days |
| Axis | Horizon (EDGE Miles) | 1:1 | Within 5 working days |
| Axis | Burgundy Private, Magnus for Burgundy | 5:4 | Within 5 working days |
| Axis | Magnus, Reserve | 5:2 | Within 5 working days |
| Axis | Select, Privilege, Rewards | 10:1 | Within 5 working days |
| SBI Card | MILES, MILES PRIME, MILES ELITE | 1:1 (minimum 1,000) | About 2 working days |
| SBI Card | AURUM | 5:1 | Varies |
A few other banks are on Air India’s partner list too, including Yes Bank, IndusInd, Kotak, DBS and RBL. If you hold one of their cards, check the bank’s rewards page for the ratio.
What about Amex? Sorry, no. Amex India’s airline partners are British Airways, Qatar, Singapore Airlines, Cathay and Virgin Atlantic, and Air India isn’t one of them.
Axis: watch the yearly cap
Since September 2026, Air India sits in Axis’s Group A. That’s the smaller of Axis’s two yearly transfer allowances, and Air India shares it with KrisFlyer, United, Turkish and others. On Atlas, that’s 30,000 EDGE Miles a year. Our Axis transfer partners update has every card’s limit.
ICICI: only two cards make sense
On Emeralde Private Metal and Times Black, one ICICI point becomes one Air India point. On every other ICICI card, you need 6 ICICI points for one Air India point, and that’s rarely worth it. Our guide to ICICI reward points has the full breakdown.
Before you transfer
Find your award seat first, and then move the points. Transfers can’t be reversed, they only go to a Maharaja Club account in your own name, and some take up to 5 working days to arrive.
Air India co-branded credit cards
Got an old Air India SBI Signature or Platinum card? SBI stopped issuing them to new customers back in October 2024. If yours is still active, it keeps earning: up to 10 Maharaja points per ₹100 on Air India tickets and up to 4 on everything else, and you can convert the points across.
The Tata Neu HDFC card is sometimes listed as an Air India card, but it earns NeuCoins. NeuCoins can’t be converted to Maharaja points, and you can’t combine the two on a booking.
The new Air India SBI card (announced October 2026)
On 28 October 2026, Air India, SBI Card and Visa announced a new co-branded Air India credit card. It’s due “in the coming months”. There’s no word yet on its name, fees, earn rate or welcome benefits. We’ll update this section as soon as the details are out.
Best credit card for Air India points
The best Air India credit card is the one that earns the most Maharaja points for every ₹100 you spend. Here’s how the main cards compare on regular spends, once you transfer.
| Card | Air India points per ₹100 | Spend for 5,000 points (Delhi to Goa) | Return at ₹1.50 a point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Axis Magnus for Burgundy | 4.8 | About ₹1.04 lakh | About 7.2% |
| Axis Atlas (existing holders) | 4 (10 on travel) | About ₹1.25 lakh | About 6% |
| HSBC Premier | 3 | About ₹1.67 lakh | About 4.5% |
| ICICI Emeralde Private Metal | 3 | About ₹1.67 lakh | About 4.5% |
| Axis Magnus | 2.4 (7 above ₹1.5 lakh a month) | About ₹2.08 lakh | About 3.6% |
| ICICI Times Black | 2 | About ₹2.5 lakh | About 3% |
| Axis Horizon | 2 | About ₹2.5 lakh | About 3% |
| HDFC Infinia | 1.67 | About ₹3 lakh | About 2.5% |
| SBI Card MILES ELITE | 1 (3 on travel) | About ₹5 lakh | About 1.5% |
| ICICI Sapphiro | 0.33 | About ₹15 lakh | About 0.5% |
That Sapphiro row isn’t a typo. At 6:1, a one-way flight to Thailand (12,000 Air India points) needs 72,000 ICICI points, which is ₹36 lakh of spending.
Two notes. Axis closed Atlas to new applicants in early 2026, so it’s only an option if you already hold it. And HDFC Infinia isn’t really an Air India card. Its points are worth ₹1 each on SmartBuy flights, which already beats the 2:1 transfer on most routes. Our HDFC Infinia guide has the details.
How to redeem Air India points
Booking with points works a lot like booking a normal ticket. You just do it logged in.
Award flights
- Log in to Maharaja Club on airindia.com or in the Air India app.
- Search your flight and pick Points (or Cash + Points) as the way to pay.
- Pick a Value fare if you can. Prime fares cost more points but are available even at peak times.
- Verify the booking with the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
- Pay the taxes, fuel surcharge and booking fee by credit card. Only credit cards are accepted for this.
Children need the same points as adults. Infants can’t be added online, so call Air India after booking. To book awards for friends or family, you need at least two Air India or Air India Express flights credited to your account, on different PNRs.
Cabin upgrades
Air India upgrades start at 4,000 points on domestic flights and 20,000 on international ones. You can only move up one cabin, say from economy to premium economy, or from premium economy to business. To request one, go to the Upgrade Your Class section, enter your ticket details and confirm with an OTP. You pay any taxes on the upgrade, and if you cancel the ticket, the points usually come back (fare rules apply).
Star Alliance partner airlines
Air India is part of Star Alliance, so you can use your points on 25 partner airlines, including Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Turkish, United and Thai. Book on the Air India website. Partner awards aren’t available on Star Alliance codeshare flights, and the calculator lets you check partner prices before you search.
If you’re flying Air India itself, it’s worth comparing with KrisFlyer too. KrisFlyer can book Air India seats, and some cards transfer to it at better ratios. Our KrisFlyer miles value guide explains how.
The best and worst ways to use Maharaja points
Best uses:
- Long-haul business class to the US or Europe, at ₹2 to ₹4+ a point.
- Gulf and Southeast Asia economy at 12,000 points, when cash fares are high.
- Domestic routes with expensive fares, like Delhi to Goa in peak season.
Worst uses:
- Delhi to London in economy. The surcharge and fees take a big bite, so it’s under ₹1 a point.
- Prime fares on cheap domestic routes. Paying 14,000 points for a ₹7,500 flight is a bad trade.
- Buying points to book a flight that’s cheap in cash.
Here’s how much it matters. Person A and Person B both have 1,30,000 Maharaja points.
Person A books three one-way economy flights from Delhi to London at 35,000 points each. That’s ₹1,23,912 in fares, minus about ₹47,400 in cash costs, so they save around ₹76,500.
Person B books one Delhi to San Francisco flight in business class. That’s a ₹5,78,655 seat for about ₹23,400 in cash costs, so they save around ₹5.55 lakh.
Same points, and Person B gets over seven times more. Our guide on how to redeem credit card points shows how this works with other programmes too.
Do Air India Maharaja points expire?
Yes. Maharaja points are valid for 24 months, but every eligible Air India or Air India Express flight you take extends all your points by another 24 months. So if you fly Air India at least once every two years, your points effectively don’t expire.
Award flights, codeshares and Star Alliance flights don’t extend your points. Points earned from partners like banks and hotels also last 24 months. Once points expire, Air India won’t bring them back.
Air India family pool
A Family Pool lets up to nine family members, including the head of the family, combine their Maharaja points into one account. Each member needs at least two Air India flights credited to their account, on different PNRs. Once points move into the pool, they can’t go back.
Claiming missing points
Forgot to add your Maharaja Club ID? You can claim missing points from 7 days after your flight. For Air India flights, you have up to 12 months. For Star Alliance partners, it’s 6 to 12 months, and you must have been a member on the date you flew. Retro claims aren’t available for Air India Express flights yet.
Should you buy Air India points?
Air India sells Maharaja points at ₹1.50 each, in batches of 100, up to 2,00,000 points a year. You need to have taken at least one paid Air India flight first.
Buying points only makes sense when you’re a little short for an award that’s worth more than ₹1.50 a point. Topping up a few thousand points for a business class seat, for example. Buying points for a domestic economy flight usually saves you little or nothing over paying cash.
Let PointsFly do the tracking
Working out which card transfers at what ratio, whether a route is worth it once the surcharge is in, and when your points expire takes time. Most people just book whatever’s available and hope for the best.
PointsFly keeps track of it for you. It shows you which card earns the most on each purchase, and when it’s time to redeem, it finds the transfer or award flight that gets you the most for your points.

Writing about Air India Maharaja Club? Feel free to use our numbers.
Award prices, fees, validity and family pool rules come from Air India’s Maharaja Club pages, FAQs, terms and points calculator, read on 30 October 2026. Transfer ratios come from Air India’s bank partner pages and each bank’s terms. The cash fares are one-way Air India fares for 2 December 2026, which we looked up on Google Flights on 30 October. The cash you still pay on an award is a PointsFly estimate: fuel surcharge, airport taxes and Air India’s booking fee.
Something like this works: “PointsFly found that an Air India Maharaja Club point is worth about ₹1 to ₹2 on most award flights, and around ₹4 on long-haul business class to the US.”
All we ask is a link back. We update these numbers whenever Air India changes its award prices.
