Card overview

The Amex Platinum Card is American Express’s top card in India, and it’s a metal charge card that costs ₹66,000 + GST a year, earns Membership Rewards points and has no preset spending limit.

Most people see that fee and stop reading, and fair enough. But the American Express Platinum Card isn’t really built around earning points on groceries. It’s built around travel: hotel status at seven programmes, Fine Hotels + Resorts stays with breakfast and a US$100 credit, 1,550+ airport lounges, and points that move to airlines like Singapore Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.

So the real question isn’t “how many points do I get?” It’s “how much of this will I actually use?”

Heads up: New American Express card applications in India are temporarily paused. If you already hold the Platinum Card, nothing changes. Your benefits carry on as usual.

Membership Rewards point value at a glance

The same point can be worth very different amounts.

₹1+ per point

Airline transfers with a good award seat

₹0.50 per point

Taj Experiences gift cards (current promo)

₹0.25 to ₹0.40

Most vouchers and statement credit

Here’s what that looks like. Say you’ve saved up 40,000 points. As Taj gift cards, that’s ₹20,000. Sent to Singapore Airlines, it’s 20,000 KrisFlyer miles, and if those miles cover a ₹40,000 flight, each point just did ₹1 of work. Same points, double the value.

Where you earn, and where you don’t

Where you earn most

20 pts per ₹40
Darveys, RAS Luxury Oils and Newby Teas, through RewardXcelerator. 28 more brands, from Bvlgari and Dyson to Air India and Indian Accent, earn 10 points per ₹40.

Strong rates

3 pts per ₹40 on anything you spend abroad (any non-INR transaction).
5 pts per ₹100 on fuel, up to 5,000 points a month.
1 pt per ₹40 on almost everything else.

Earns nothing

  • Insurance premiums
  • Electricity, gas and water bills
  • EMIs set up by the merchant

Key takeaways

  • The Amex Platinum Card costs ₹66,000 + GST (about ₹77,880) every year, and there’s no spend-based fee waiver.
  • It’s a charge card. There’s no preset spending limit, but you clear the full bill every month.
  • Points are worth around ₹0.50 on Taj gift cards and can be worth ₹1 or more when you transfer them to airlines.
  • You get Marriott Bonvoy Gold, Hilton Honors Gold and five more hotel statuses for as long as you hold the card.
  • Priority Pass is free outside India only. In India, each Priority Pass visit costs US$35.

Amex Platinum is a charge card: what that means

The Amex Platinum is a charge card, not a credit card. You pay the full balance every month, there’s no preset spending limit, and you can’t carry a balance over to next month.

They look the same in your wallet, which is why so many people mix them up. The difference shows up when the bill comes.

Amex Platinum (charge card)A regular credit card
Paying the billThe full amount, every monthMinimum due, or more
Spending limitNothing set in advanceA fixed limit
InterestNone. Pay late and it’s a 5% fee (at least ₹300)Charged on what you carry over

You still get up to 48 days of interest-free credit on each purchase. You just can’t stretch it beyond that.

Amex Platinum card annual fee and charges

The Amex Platinum annual fee is ₹66,000 + GST, which comes to about ₹77,880 a year, and it’s the same in the first year and every year after.

Can you waive the annual fee?

No. A lot of premium cards in India drop the fee once you spend a set amount, but the Amex Platinum doesn’t.

What you do get is a renewal gift. Spend over ₹20 lakh in a membership year, pay the renewal fee, and Amex sends you a voucher worth up to ₹35,000. Handy, but it’s a gift, not a waiver. The ₹66,000 still gets charged.

ChargeWhat you pay
Annual fee₹66,000 + GST
Add-on cardsFirst 4 free, then ₹10,000 + GST each
Forex markup3.5% on foreign currency spends
Late payment5% of the unpaid amount (minimum ₹300)
Cash withdrawal3.5% of the amount (minimum ₹250)
Overseas cash limitUS$750 equivalent every 14 days
IRCTC bookings1.8% of the transaction (minimum ₹10) + tax

One thing worth knowing: cash withdrawals in India are suspended right now. Overseas withdrawals still work at eligible locations.

American Express Platinum card limit

There’s no preset spending limit on the American Express Platinum Card. Amex approves each charge based on your income, how you usually spend and how you’ve paid in the past.

That’s not the same as unlimited, though. Most cardholders find there’s plenty of room. But if you’re about to buy something really big, like a car or a long family holiday, a quick call to Amex beforehand saves you an awkward moment at the counter.

How you earn Membership Rewards points on Amex Platinum

The Amex Platinum earns 1 Membership Rewards point for every ₹40 you spend, 3 points per ₹40 abroad, and up to 20 points per ₹40 at RewardXcelerator brands.

Where you spendWhat you earn
Everyday spends1 point per ₹40
Fuel5 points per ₹100 (up to 5,000 a month)
Spends abroad (non-INR)3 points per ₹40
RewardXcelerator 10X brands10 points per ₹40
RewardXcelerator 20X brands20 points per ₹40

On everyday spends, that’s 2.5 points for every ₹100, which isn’t a big number on paper. What turns it into a good one is where you send those points, and we’ll get to that in a minute.

Add-on cards earn too, and their points land in your account.

When the points actually arrive

Points show up once your charges are recorded in Membership Rewards, so nothing unusual there.

The part people miss: if you don’t pay your statement in full by the due date, you can lose the points from that billing cycle. That’s the charge-card rule. Pay in full every month and you’ll never run into it. Your points also don’t expire while your account is open and in good standing.

RewardXcelerator 20X and 10X partners

If you already shop at these brands, this is where the card quietly earns its keep. You get the bonus on top of your regular 1 point per ₹40, and there’s no overall cap. The programme runs till 31 January 2027.

Tip to make your PointsFly: pay with the physical card at these brands. Digital wallets don’t qualify, and BOSS and both Armani labels only count in-store.

Used Amex’s Reward Multiplier portal for 5X on Flipkart or MakeMyTrip? That ended on 30 September 2026. Here’s what to use instead.

What earns you nothing

Three things earn zero: insurance premiums, utility bills (electricity, gas and water), and EMIs the merchant sets up for you. Fuel isn’t on this list. It earns double the base rate until you reach 5,000 points in a month.

What your Membership Rewards points are worth

Amex Membership Rewards points in India are worth about ₹0.25 to ₹0.40 on most vouchers, around ₹0.50 on Taj gift cards during the current promo, and ₹1 or more when you transfer them to an airline and book well.

How you redeemApproximate value per point
Airline transfers (good award seat)₹1 or more
Taj Experiences gift cards (current promo)₹0.50
Platinum Collection vouchers₹0.40
Other vouchers, Pay with Points, card charges₹0.25 or less

There’s a simple way to check any redemption:

Value per point = what it would’ve cost in cash ÷ points used

Take 40,000 points, which is roughly ₹16 lakh of everyday spending. Here’s where they can go:

  • Taj gift cards: two ₹10,000 cards. That’s ₹20,000, or about ₹0.50 a point.
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer: 20,000 miles. If they cover a flight that costs ₹40,000 in cash, you’re at ₹1 a point.
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club: 32,000 Virgin Points, thanks to the 5:4 rate.
  • Hilton Honors: a whopping 60,000 Hilton points (2:3 works in your favour here).

Same 40,000 points, and the KrisFlyer route is worth double the Taj one. Curious what your own balance could do? Plug it into our reward points calculator.

How to redeem Amex points

  1. Link your account. Your airline or hotel account has to be connected to Membership Rewards first, and Amex can take up to 14 days to verify it. Do it now, not the night before you book.
  2. Find the seat or room. Make sure the award space actually exists before a single point moves.
  3. Transfer. Most transfers land in 3 to 5 working days.
  4. Book. Award seats don’t wait around, so book as soon as the miles show up.

Transfers are final, and they only go to your own account. You can’t send points to a friend’s or a family member’s loyalty account.

Tip to make your PointsFly: a little short for a transfer? Amex lets you buy points at ₹400 per 1,000, up to 10,000 points (or as many as you already have, if that’s lower).

Amex Platinum transfer partners (India)

In India, Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to 5 airlines and 2 hotel programmes. Four of the airlines are at 2:1, Virgin Atlantic is at 5:4, and the hotels are at 1:1 and 2:3.

Quick note before the tables: if you search for Amex transfer partners, a lot of what comes up is for US cards, which have a much longer list. The list below is for cards issued in India.

Before you hit transfer

Every partner has its own minimum transfer, so check the number on the Amex portal before you start. Partners also come and go. Etihad Guest left on 1 July 2026, and Emirates Skywards has been paused since May 2025.

Golden rule: seat (or room) first, transfer second. Never the other way round.

The Hotel Collection is the lighter version. Book at least two nights in a row and you get a US$100 experience credit, plus an upgrade when one’s available.

Welcome and renewal benefits

  • Welcome gift (up to ₹60,000): you choose between Taj, Luxe Gift Card and The Postcard Hotels vouchers. To unlock it, pay the fee and put ₹50,000 on the card within 2 months. Then sit tight, because it takes 6 to 8 weeks to show up.
  • Renewal gift (up to ₹35,000): this one’s for big spenders. Cross ₹20 lakh in a membership year, pay the renewal fee, and it’s yours.

Dining and other perks

  • EazyDiner Prime, on the house. That’s 25% to 50% off at 2,000+ restaurants.
  • Platinum Concierge, 24×7. Whether it’s flights, a hard-to-get table or a last-minute gift, they’ll sort it.
  • Meet & Greet at 17 Indian airports (the offer runs till 31 December 2026).
  • Insurance you’ll be glad to have: ₹5 crore air accident cover, US$50,000 overseas medical, ₹5 lakh purchase protection, and up to ₹50,000 if your checked bags turn up late on an international trip.

On top of all this, there’s a rotating pile of hotel and dining offers. They change almost every month, so open the Amex app before you book anything big.

Amex Platinum lounge access

Amex Platinum lounge access covers 1,550+ airport lounges in 140 countries, Centurion Lounges included, through the American Express Global Lounge Collection. The one catch is Priority Pass, which is free only outside India.

How it works in India

  • Centurion Lounges: walk in as often as you like. Bringing someone along? Guest rules differ from lounge to lounge.
  • Priority Pass abroad: you’re enrolled automatically, and every visit is free.
  • Priority Pass in India: US$35 per person, per visit. Yes, even for you. At Indian airports, skip it and use Amex’s domestic lounge partners.
  • Add-ons: one add-on cardholder can get their own Priority Pass.
  • The rest: Escape Lounges, Lufthansa lounges, Delta Sky Club (if you’re flying Delta that day) and more. Each network has its own fine print, so a 30-second check before you fly saves a wasted walk.

2026 updates at a glance

Three things changed on the Amex Platinum this year:

  • Etihad Guest was dropped as a transfer partner (1 July 2026).
  • Virgin Atlantic improved to 5:4 and Hilton to 2:3 (18 August 2026).
  • New card applications in India were paused.

This page is already up to date with all three. Not sure the card still makes sense for you after them? Our 2026 breakdown for existing cardholders runs the numbers.

Amex Platinum card eligibility

Amex Platinum card eligibility comes down to three things: ₹25 lakh a year in income if you’re salaried (₹15 lakh if you’re self-employed), a clean credit history, and an address in one of the 26 cities Amex serves. Applications are on pause for now, though.

RequirementSalariedSelf-employed

Annual income₹25 lakh or more₹15 lakh or more
Business vintageNot applicableTrading for 12+ months

Amex only issues the card in 26 cities right now: Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Indore, Coimbatore, Chandigarh/Tricity, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Ernakulam, Vijayawada, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Nagpur, Nashik, Trivandrum, Mysuru, Cuttack and Vizag.

How to get the Amex Platinum Card

Right now, you can’t apply. Amex has paused new card applications in India while it updates its systems.

When applications reopen, you’ll apply on the American Express India website with the usual details: income, employer or business, and bank. Expect a KYC check too (ID, address proof, PAN, proof of income). And once you’re approved, don’t sit on it. A card that isn’t activated within 37 days gets cancelled.

Already hold an Amex Gold Card or Membership Rewards Credit Card? Watch your Amex account, since that’s usually where Platinum upgrade offers pop up.

Should you get it?

It’s a great fit if you fly abroad a few times a year, you like staying at Marriott, Hilton, Taj or FHR hotels, and you’d rather move points to airlines than cash them in for vouchers. For you, the points are the least of what this card gives back.

Mostly spending on groceries, fuel and the occasional dinner? Prefer vouchers? Want a fee that disappears once you spend enough? Then a lower-fee card will do more for you.

Amex Platinum FAQs

Is the Amex Platinum a charge card?

Yes. The Amex Platinum is a charge card, so you pay your full statement every month and can’t carry a balance. In return, there’s no preset spending limit. Miss a payment and you pay a 5% late fee (at least ₹300) rather than interest.

Can the Amex Platinum annual fee be waived?

No. The ₹66,000 + GST fee applies every year, whatever you spend. If you spend over ₹20 lakh in a membership year and pay the renewal fee, Amex sends a renewal voucher worth up to ₹35,000, but that’s a gift, not a waiver.

What salary do I need for the Amex Platinum Card?

Amex asks for a personal income of ₹25 lakh a year if you’re salaried, or ₹15 lakh if you’re self-employed with a business that’s been trading for more than 12 months. You also need a good credit history and an address in a city Amex serves.

Is the Amex Platinum Card hard to get?

Right now, yes, because new applications in India are paused. Once they reopen, the main hurdles are the income requirement (₹25 lakh salaried, ₹15 lakh self-employed), a clean credit history and living in one of the 26 cities Amex serves.

Is the Amex Platinum a metal card?

Yes, the Amex Platinum Card in India is a metal card, and you’ll notice the weight the first time you hold it next to your other cards.

Does Priority Pass work in India on Amex Platinum?

It works, but it isn’t free. Priority Pass lounges in India cost US$35 per person per visit on the Amex Platinum. Outside India, Priority Pass lounges are free. For domestic airports, use Amex’s own lounge partners.
